Shit Happens…

Although we live in a society that would have us believe that we can prevent and control everything, the opposite is proven almost every minute somewhere. Danger is everywhere. Except perhaps in the theatre, where everything is arranged for you. You hold out your ticket to be torn. You sit down. You watch and listen with the comfortable certainty that everything that is presented, down to the smallest detail, has been rehearsed and prepared. Even the unexpected?

In Belgium, “coalition” evokes both the only possibility of managing public affairs, and the seeds that will lead to its implosion. Public order, security and stability can only be guaranteed by a system that is unstable by nature, that carries within itself the promise of unprecedented debacles, and that never fails to destroy itself with great regularity, only to rise again from its ashes like the phoenix.

With this specific context in mind, Tristero and Transquinquennal have not hesitated to cross the linguistic rubicon in order to free themselves from any preoccupation with community, and face up to this new contemporary quest for the absolute: our need for security is impossible to satisfy.

Are we aware of all the dangers that threaten us? Are we prepared to deal with any eventuality? Why do we only take action against minor dangers, when we are putting the entire planet at risk? Why do we persist in living dangerously? Why do all our efforts only lead to the creation of even more terrible disasters? What do we ultimately aspire to: safety or comfort?

While the two collectives’ answers are far from exhaustive, they leave nothing to chance within the strict confines of the performance.

Coalition, c’est une réflexion amusée, sur notre impuissance à prévoir des accidents, parfois graves et à y remédier efficacement. Le fil conducteur visuel du spectacle ce sont des enregistrements vidéo, notamment d’un avion soviétique, qui, en 1989, est venu s’écraser sur une malheureuse maison isolée en Flandre, tuant un étudiant endormi, après avoir franchi, sans être repéré par plusieurs pays de l’OTAN Des images aussi d’une prise d’otages par des Tchétchènes dans un théâtre de Moscou dont un négociateur est un chanteur russe aussi célèbre qu’Adamo chez nous. Voilà qui bien sûr provoque une résonance avec la catastrophe qu'évoque "Coalition". Les compagnies Transquinquennal et Tristero, réunies par affinité pour l'ici et maintenant, pour la transparence de la convention qui les lie au public, ont donc choisi de sonder dans cette création la survenue du malheur et comment l'humain qu'il frappe tente de l'expliquer. On commence par déchiffrer, par précaution, la date de péremption des extincteurs, tandis que le Kaaitheater, le Kunsten et les deux compagnies déclinent toute responsabilité en cas d'accident.
